Comments Thread For: Jhonny Gonzalez is Inspired By Juan Manuel Marquez

WBC featherweight Champion Jhonny Gonzalez wants to follow the starlit trail blazed by his gym teammate, Juan Manuel Marquez, by writing another glorious page in boxing history, Aztec style. Both fighters are trained by Hall of Fame coach Ignacio "Nacho" Beristain. This Saturday he defends his title against Gary Russell Jr. at The Palms in Las Vegas.

You should consider letting that loss go. Manny is fine, in fact he bounced back and is about to have the biggest fight in history. You should be happy

          It will be okay.

I really want to see Gonzalez vs the Mares/Santa Cruz winner. Russel is a decent test but I'm confident in Jhonny.

Not me dude. I don't rate TBA slayer highly, but I'm sure his going to beat Gonzales. Once he realises that he can beat Johnny to the punch his going to out work him. I don't know why but I got the feeling his going to stop Johnny

Here's the thing about Russel, he needs his opponent to stand in front of him in order to load up his combinations. With a much shorter arm reach and Jhonny's impeccable jab, I just don't see how Russel could outwork Jhonny if his only solution is to find a way on the inside. Long to mid range will be Jhonny's game and Gary doesn't have enough power to hurt Jhonny if he gets in close quarters.

I could be completely wrong on this one but that's how boxing works, you can't really call these fights with 100 percent certainty since every fighter has a chance to land the perfect shot.

Gary's handspeed is blistering fast but what good did that do him against a fighter whom wasn't a tomato can? Nothing. He was throwing combinations while Lomachenko had pivoted out of the way and was unloading on him . I had picked Russel to beat Vasyl that fight but after witnessing that his skill against cans does not translate against higher caliber fighters, I'm not making the same possible mistake twice. Especially not when he's going against a polished, power punching technician in Gonzalez.

I think Russel Jr. will try to get flashy and will get caught coming in with one of Jhonny's explosive left hooks. If I'm right, it's lights out for Chomper and back to the Ice age for him.
