How long is the average career span of a professional boxer? We know boxing is different from other sports because as long as you can get commissioned and set up a fight you can get yourself a professional boxing match. But with all the injuries that can come with a pro boxing career, I was wondering about how long in terms of years (or number of fights) is the average professional boxing career. We have more and more guys fighting in to their late 30's and even into their 40's nowadays. Also, what age do you think most boxers start to decline?

And you would be correct. Thirty is the age when most boxers start to lose a little speed and skill and reaction time. By age 35 they have usually lost quite a lot. Guys like Hopkins are the exception, not the rule. Training methods may have improved but humans still age the same way they always have. Most boxers turn pro in their early 20s and retire in their early to mid thirties a few years later than they should. Study the career of most boxers and see when they were at their very best. In most cases they were at their best between age 25 and age 28 or 29. Were Tyson or Leonard or De La Hoya as good at age 33 as they were at age 27? 20s is your pure physical prime but most boxers really peak in their 30s on the career level (experience, exposure, opponents, etc).Comment
