QUEBEC CITY - After dominating the amateur ranks during two entire Olympic cycles, Russian prospect Artur Beterbiev is now ready for pro boxing's elite, even though he has only fought seven times as a professional. The Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM) ***el will continue his journey April 4 in Quebec City, airing live on CBS and TVA Sports, against former world champion Gabriel Campillo, of Spain.

Beterbiev is facing pretty good opposition for only 7 pro fights and now going into his 8th against Campillo. I just hope that if he wins, he has a few more fights before he plans to face Kovalev. With a win, its obvious he will get elevated in the rankings. He also should work on his defense from what i saw in his last fight.

Well, this was his first Olympic cycle, and if BoxRec.com is correct, in 2008, it wasn't domination, but the loss to China's Xiaoping was controversial.

Round 1/8 - Lost to Zhang Xiaoping (China) 2-8

Here's the Wiki analysis of his amateur career:
The aggressive puncher Beterbiyev won the 2006 European Amateur Boxing Championships among others beating Irishman Kenneth Egan and Ismail Sillakh. He beat southpaw Egor Mekhontsev but lost to two-time world champion Evgeny Makarenko in 2006. He finally beat him in 2007 and qualified for the World championships. In the finals he faced little-known Uzbek southpaw Abbos Atoev but was upset.

At the Olympics 2008 he beat Kennedy Katende 15:3 then fell controversially to local Zhang Xiaoping who went on to win.

In Milan he beat young Cuban Jose Larduet and Uzbek Elshod Rasulov for the world championship 2009.

Heavyweight 201lbs/91kg[edit]
At the 2011 World Amateur Boxing Championships ***8211; Heavyweight he lost to eventual winner Oleksandr Usyk 13:17.

At the Boxing at the 2012 Summer Olympics ***8211; Men's heavyweight he edged out Michael Hunter but lost again by 13:17 to Usyk.
Now that Beterbiev's is a pro, does his amateur career even matter?
