Comments Thread For: HBO, Main Events Negotiating New Sergey Kovalev Deal

It appears to be a mere formality, but Sergey Kovalev’s representatives and HBO Sports executives must come to terms on a new contract if the undefeated light heavyweight champion is to continue fighting exclusively on that premium cable channel.

The multi-fight contract Kovalev signed with HBO several days before beating Cedric Agnew last March 29 in Atlantic City expired following Kovalev’s impressive eighth-round technical knockout win over Quebec’s Jean Pascal (29-3-1, 17 KOs, 1 NC) on Saturday night in Montreal. Main Events chief executive officer Kathy Duva, whose company promotes Kovalev (27-0-1, 24 KOs), has been discussing a new contract with HBO Sports brass and fully expects the network’s successful partnership with the Russian knockout artist to continue.

HBO is still the premier network for boxing. PBC/NBC wishes they had a fighter even close to Kovalev.

Uncle Al could make a very big offer. If Haymon were to take Kovalev away from HBO that would be a serious blow to their roster.

Duva still burned, but not saying it's not possible. She's a mid-tier promoter, TR and GBP are already past working with them for the time being, these guys aren't

For my sake as a fan, I want HBO to do the right thing and pay Sergey what he's worth.

That's good news for Kovalev. He deserves it and should be getting paid top dollar.

Great for Kovalev. He's earned it.

Haymon basically already screwed over Duva when she had an agreement with HBO and Stevenson only to see him sign with Haymon and pull out out that deal. That got nasty to the point where she sued his ass. Haymon then stole here connect at NBC. Duva has been constantly bashing Haymon's PBC deal. And after that you think she will let her biggest fighter sign with Haymon? Unless it's to put on a Kovalev vs Stevenson unification fight Duva wants nothing to do with Haymon. The real threat is Showtime coming in and making a great multi fight offer to steal him from HBO.
