Comments Thread For: WBC: Jean Pascal Withdraws From Stevenson Title Race

For reasons unknown to the WBC, Jean Pascal will not participate in the elimination process to determine the mandatory challenger for the WBC Light Heavyweight World Championship. Pascal's advisor, Greg Leon, informed the WBC of Pascal's decision.

During the 2014 WBC Convention, the WBC Board of Governors voted to make the winner of Pascal’s upcoming fight on March 14 against Sergey Kovalev the division’s mandatory challenger. The WBC Board of Governors’ unprecedented vote was aimed at facilitating and expediting the fight the boxing world wants to see: the winner of Kovalev vs. Pascal against WBC champion Adonis “Superman” Stevenson, with all four belts being contested.

With 3 belts and being the bigger draw, he'll want more than 50/50.

Where in the world is Kovalev a bigger draw that Pascal, or Stevenson for that matter, in Montreal? There will likely be 15,000 people in the venue on Saturday, and I'd be willing to argue that 10,000 people will be there to see Pascal and 4,000 people will be there to see a big fight.

Stevenson-Kovalev (for all the belts) is a big enough fight that the MGM Grand or Barclays Center would gladly put out a big site fee to bring them in, but other than that, the fight is biggest in Montreal, without much question.

50/50 is more than fair, tbh.

Makes sense. If Pascal loses, he loses the spot anyway. If he wins, he holds three belts and the superior position over Stevenson. Either way he doesn't need the mandatory shot.

I don't know when this began but making other champions the mandatory to different belts is freaking music to my ears. Never made sense to take them out of the rankings in the first place just because they won another belt.

they were taken out of the rankings because keeping them there is a waste of time. If a unification makes $ense, it will happen, with or without any "mandatory" designation. If it doesnt make $ense, then the other champ wont participate in the purse bid anyways and they have to start from scratch with someone else.

Its a waste of time. And the only reason for the WBC to do this is so they can attach a "diamond belt" sanctioning fee to the Kovalev-Pascal fight
