A Fight Fans Thoughts On The Return Of Boxing To Prime Networks

I grew up during the time when boxing was a regular staple on major network programming....i vividly remember watching it on CBS and ABC and even on regular cable channels like USA's Tuesday Night Fights...

I was saddened when it was taken off and became a HBO and Showtime thing..last night marked the return of boxing to the big stage...a return to the glory days and i kinda had mixed thoughts/feelings about it.

    here's some random **** about last night;

    1. Al Michaels and Marv Albert make the whole **** legit...you have the top football (hand egg for you green teefs) and top basketball guy doing the lead off and play by play, you know its serious business

    2. they need to show Leila talking because unless we see her pretty face, its just a deep voiced amazon b1tch that not giving us any info of any use

    3. Sugar Ray Leonard is the officially the Haymon fighter hypeman...anyone remember how many times he said 'im really impressed by Broner/Thurman' last night? or how many times did he say 'Broner/Thurman is really smart'...i rarely mentioned anything about Molina/Guerrero

    4. the reason why i'm only 80% engaged with ESPN Friday Night Fights is because of commercials...honestly, i effing hate commercials...i see a great round, i wanna stay in the moment...i wanna see, hear, FEEL the corner and everything that's going on...THAT drama is a big part of boxing and i wanna be a part of..i DONT want to see the same ****ing lame ass Corona commercial after every round

    5. speaking of commercials other than Corona, i just realized that every fighter they showed a commercial for was someone i would want to see lose..DSG who thinks he's some kind of star...Wilder, Quillin, Floyd..thanks, Al...you bring boxing back to the public only to highlight the scumbags and hypejobs of the sport

    6. Censorship. i hate this more than commercials...i know it's prime time and its a major network but cussing happens...either put a viewer disclaimer and let it go or dont even try broadcasting...when the sound goes off for 5 seconds, its downright lame..dont try to PG a Rated R sport

When boxing was forced to become HBO and Showtime, i was saddened because i thought it deserved to be in the national spotlight...but maybe i was wrong..maybe HBO and Showtime is the only platform that boxing can be fully appreciated and can fully thrive...**** the commercials...boxing fans want to see a full minute of replays in between rounds...they deserve to hear cornermen and boxers talk their ****...it's a nice effort by NBC and i'll continue to watch but it just doesn't have that same feel/appeal to it

Good post. I think the PG coverage waters it down a bit too. I know a lot of people hate Broner but network TV somewhat kills his personality and bad guy image.

But, I would still like this project to succeed. There is room for network and premium boxing.

I got two or three texts from casual boxing fans who I told to tune in last night and they were not happy at all with that Broner match. They all thought Molina had been paid off and said that it looked like a joke. One of them did send another text during the Guerrero fight and said that he thought that fight was really good and that he would tune in to see Thurman again.

EDIT: There were several comments about how awkward and lame the ring entrances were too, that was the consistent perception from friends that were casuals.

Agree totally. Some things can be fixed but it came across as some type of new Haymon boxing. It just wasn't the same.
The hyping of fighters that have ducked competition as the best stars of they're divisions had me rolling.

so would i...when i was a kid, the thing that drew me in was how CBS and ABC put you right in there...you had an instant feel for the fight...last nite was ok but i didnt get that same feel for their production...it seemed more like a 'show' than a competition

For the Mares fight I think they showed the backstory videos during the lame ringwalks. It was a lot better.

Agree with most of it except this part. I remember Sugar Ray complimenting Broner, but he also criticized him for being too vulgar sometimes and for not closing the show against Molina.

He also kept saying Molina was dangerous and could turn the fight around with one punch. And Molina didn't show much last night so you can't expect too much praise. I also remember he kept mentioning how tough Guerrero is and how he's a warrior so I don't really feel like he neglected Molina and Guerrero. Overall thought he was pretty impartial last night.
