Comments Thread For: Golovkin's Trainer: GGG's Main Focus is Cotto's Belt

WBA/IBO/WBC-interim middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (32-0, 29KOs) is a man on a mission and he wants the green belt that is currently around the waist of Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32KOs).

Last December the World Boxing Council issued an order that allowed Cotto to make a voluntary defense before his mandatory obligation to face Golovkin. Golovkin returned two weeks ago and battered Martin Murray over eleven rounds. Cotto is scheduled to return in June.

Abel Sanchez, who trains Golovkin, wants his boxer to get that mandatory shot. He says GGG is capable of being ready to fight Cotto as early as June. Cotto is still without a finalized opponent, with names like Tim Bradley, Brandon Rios and Cornelius 'K9' Bundrage being mentioned as opponents.

Cotto could possibly make around $10mill fighting Golovkin in June, where he could make $2-3mill fighting Bundrage (who would cost alot less than Bradley), and then fight Alvarez for atleast $10mill in the winter. I understand team Golovkin has to explore the option of fighting Cotto, but it's pretty unrealistic.

IMO I think cotto is gonna fight k9 for the IBF title and vacate the 160 lbs title.

Gennady has earned the right to be called the lineal, unified, undisputed MW champion of the world. That can't happen while Cotto has the belt. Even if he relinquishes the title, there will always be an asterisk, like an addendum at the bottom of Gennady's resume that says "The sort of lineal champion, he probably would've beaten Cotto, but who knows."

As Golovkin's detractors love to point out, hypothetical victories don't count.

"i am going to do what is best for miguel cotto and miguel tells me that he will pick k9 because the boxing fans deserve it" - Cotto

cotto fighting for the 154 belt against k9 adds more prestige to his hall of fame career and is a nice tune up since cotto is been out a long time then the canelo fight can happen if canelo steps up then I can see ggg getting the fight unless Floyd wants the rematch

What you said makes no sense. Your order for cotto is K9,canelo,and maybe GGG? The moment that cotto fights k9,he wastes his mandatory fight. After k9,he either drops the belt,or fights GGG. But my question is,how is getting the 154lb IBF belt against k9,more impressive than beating GGG for his 2 160lb belts, and earning the spot of the undisputed middleweight champ of the world?

Seriously, ggg and his team want cotto in the worst way, and they know that it will be a big name on his resume and in their minds they think cotto is shot and an easy fight... Easy way out they are thinking. but be careful what you wish for, I'm not saying cotto will win, but margarito did hit him with plaster for Many rounds and if he took plaster to the face, I'm Pretty sure he can take ggg punch as well lol.. Cotto might be past his prime but he still has great timing and a great left hook..would be good scrap for a while.. Better than what people are saying that ggg would blast him in one round

                    It does?

To me it damages his career and makes him look like a cherrypicking coward, but whatever. He paid his dues, doe.
