  • Comments Thread For: De La Hoya: Mayweather-Pacquiao Gets 3 Million Buys

According to Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya, the upcoming fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao will break the existing record for pay-per-view purchases. De La Hoya's fight with Mayweather, from 2007, generated 2.4 million buys. Mayweather's 2013 clash with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez came close to breaking that record with 2.2 million buys.

If it's really going to be $90-$100, and only two press dates, I wouldn't be surprised if this PPV does less than expected numbers. Still record breaking though of course, but I wouldn't be shocked at 2.5m-2.7m.

A week or two before fight night the buzz will begin growing like mad. You might change your tune.

Yeah, I don't see this fight doing 3 million maybe like 1.9 or 2.1 million buys that price is a deal breaker for casuals.

Also the build up is limited, no press tour, no 24/7, imagine if they had a 24/7 they would be great for each network, the ratings would be huge, and it would have people having water cooler talk after each episode and even more casuals will say let me check that 24/7 out, they would be like dam did you hear the **** Floyd sr and roger talked about Pac and roach, did you hear Roach talk shh about Floyd sr, etc.

                Drama sells.

it just seems weird and rushed to me. Because I remember Floyd on that radio interview years ago saying it takes time to build up a super fight, you need months of promotion etc.

I predict the PPV to sell maybe 1.9-2.1 million buys depending on the ppv price, we will find out the real price point next week. But if its 100 bucks or more it won't break break the record.

Thank God Oscar chimed in giving Pac the blueprint to beat Mayweather. I was starting to worry that Pac might have the slightest chance of winning, but now I am 100% sure he has NO CHANCE of winning. Thanks Oscar!

It would have done easily more than 3 mill in 2010.

                    Not any more...
Mayweather sells 800k now on average, Pac about 600k.
