It's supposed to matter to boxing fans because it's the lineal title. It's not as if Cotto is just some random belt holder, he is THE champ at 160, a lineage we can trace back over a decade (Cotto-Martinez-Pavlik-Taylor-Hopkins). So it would be a damn shame if the belt is only defended by other welterweight at catchweights while the true and deserving middleweights never get a crack at it. So for myself and many other fans it's much more than just a belt, it's more than just Cotto. It's about the integrity of the belt, the integrity of the sport, it's boxing history.
