Comments Thread For: Murray: Golovkin Was So Strong, Couldn't Keep Him Off

Martin Murray's quest for a world title at the third time of asking ended in disappointment but not embarrassment when he suffered an 11th-round stoppage defeat to WBA world middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin in Monte Carlo on Saturday.

The St Helens boxer was not a match for the unbeaten Kazakh, who ended the contest in the penultimate round with a barrage of blows, to earn his 32nd victory of his career, and 29th by knockout. It was a brave but ultimately fruitless endeavour from Murray as Golovkin led the contest from the outset and kept up his impressive record of winning all of his world title fights by stoppage.

I absolutely agree. I think we saw the two best middleweights in the world atm on Saturday.

Martin Murray vs Daniel Geale could be something special. Like Barker-Geale.

It really makes me wonder how the proposed fight with Quillin/Murray would've went.

Middleweight titleholder “Kid Chocolate” Peter Quillin will defend his belt at some point this fall, possibly on the undercard of the Bernard Hopkins-Karo Murat fight Oct.

I wonder if it'll go down?

Would have to happen in Australia... or maybe Monaco if Bernie can make it

GGG won't lose at MW imo. He's a really good fighter with a big punch and a very good chin. Murray's a big strong guy but GGG was able to fight out of his clinch many times. People are saying Golovkin was disappointing but Murray didn't win a round. He had some success and a few competitive rounds but for the most part he was getting beat around the ring. The small ring didn't help Murray at all but I was still impressed with GGG'S dominance. I thought his stamina held up as well.

I liked what I saw from Murray too. He showed toughness and grit. It's even more impressive because of the open scoring. Murray knew he had no chance but kept on competing. I also liked his body work. I thought that would be the key to slowing Golovkin down but it didn't help Murray much. He put his punches together well though and has nothing to be ashamed of.

I don't think Cotto is going to fight Golovkin.

                    Respect his honesty.

That's pretty much what I was saying yesterday, that it must be such a nightmare, so exhausting to try and keep Golovkin off you. He's so relentless, great at cutting off the ring, constantly in front of you throwing punches pretty much non stop. If you don't have power to earn his respect, only chance you have is to constantly clinch, which I'm sure can be exhausting as well.
