Comments Thread For: De La Hoya Thrilled With Explosive Fight Weeks in May

There was the admission all along that the only way Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez was going to back off fighting on May 2 – the weekend centered around the Cinco de Mayo holiday – was to make room for the long awaited showdown between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.

True to form, Alvarez’ efforts to reclaim the Mexican holiday weekends – Cinco de Mayo and Mexican Independence Day (September 16th, or the weekend touching it as it relates to boxing events) – were compromised with Friday’s announcement of Mayweather-Pacquiao finally happening.

Since Canelos fights don't bring in ratings the PAC May replay should help.

Wait, your telling me, having another $$$ PPV a week after a highly expensive PPV that the entire world waited 6 years to see is going to help them? GTFO.

Who the hell is going to want to jump right back into another PPV after an exhausting wait and viewing of Pac-Jr. a week before that one? Not to mention we probably got to dish out a crazy amount to watch it.

Sure us boxing fans who are loco about the sport will no doubt feed into it, but I can't see the casual fans forking over another substantial pay for PPV a week following THE FIGHT.

I haven't seen any indication that Alvarez-Kirkland is PPV. Probably WCB, with the replay tacked on. Vitali-Arreola was WCB, and had Mayweather-Marquez as the replay.

You do realize he gets millions of viewers with the Spanish networks right?

You do realize he signed with HBO and Showtime prior to that.

I like Kirkland and wish he was being trained by Ann but people will still be watching the replay of the Mayweather/Pacroid fight and even though Canelo is fighting a week later he still won't get the viewers attention. I thought they were going to stick to their May 2nd date because they claimed to be a bigger draw than Floyd. Hahahahahahaha. ...... Canelo better hurry up and crawl his bum fighting zza over to Haymon before Oscar turns him I to the laughing stock of boxing. I see Canelo and Oscar both snorting ******* and trading fishnet stockings once this boy fights a legitimate fighter that the judges can't be bought off like they did in the Lara fight.

Are they still doing it as a PPV?

If HBO/SHO are BOTH going to show the replay, putting the Canelo/Kirkland fight on regular HBO will make sure they win the ratings war for the 5/9 replay......It would be a HUGE flop as a PPV.

I felt that since it's a pretty contentious issue as to who gets the replay, they should both show it and compete for it. Whoever has the best card of to follow the replay will win that ratings war. Sets HBO up quite well actually....

BUT......if I were CBS, I'd throw it on regular CBS for Sat Primetime and pull one of the fights from the other many upcoming cards, maybe Garcia-Petersen? And be sure I got HUGE ad revenue that would totally crush the $$ made for the replay.......especially since SHO has nothing else to currently offer.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out........

IF Canelo vs Kirkland is PPV it will really hurt his image as a 'PPV star'........he has good ratings generally and is starting to become a PPV star.....trying to sell that card for $60 the weekend after a $100+ card would kill it. In fact, the replay will see 4-5 times the viewers as the PPV would..........so whether both networks show the replay or only SHO, it kills that fight as a PPV success........

And let's face it, Oscar really doesn't have the fighters avaiable to make the card interesting enough..........

Whoever said Canelo doesn't deliver on ratings is just wrong. Less the 1 mil buys is not a failure. But for him, less than 300 would be and it would give Cotto even more leverage......

Oh the games.........Oscar is gonna come up short. Wonder if he's wishing he'd waited until after 5/2 to dump Schaffer??

                  LOL
