Comments Thread For: De La Hoya: I Really Hope Mayweather Picks Pacquiao

Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya is hoping Floyd Mayweather Jr. selects Manny Pacquiao as the opponent for May 2nd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The negotiations are still taking place and many are expected a final decision, in one direction or the other, by the end of the week.

De La Hoya has a dog in the fight. His star fighter, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, is also demanding to fight on May 2nd. De La Hoya's company has tentatively set Canelo's HBO televised fight with James Kirkland for May 2nd at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. If the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight is finalized, then Canelo-Kirkland will move to May 9th.

... there exists a game which is played with cards -- it's called "contract Bridge"... In Bridge, the strategy that Oscar is using (regarding the "May 2 date") is called "impasse"...
I don't think that De la Hoya ever played Bridge... But as about Floyd I'm pretty sure...

Wow. They're still not sure. They're still hoping. Been five years. And they're still not sure. Wonder why people still want to see a fight with a reluctant boxer in it. And they want to reward him with astronomical sums of money.

It's the hypocrisy of America! Don't you know? Nothing in this country seems to make much sense and Jr. is at the high level of it.

He's kind of the high executive sitting in an office of a corporation. You don't know what happens behind closes doors? Well Jr. is giving you a front row seat, rofl.

I still think Floyd will win but he gets tagged a bit more now so he may swell worse than Maidana 2 after Manny's shots....I cant see this fight being anything but extremely intense - even after the 5 years. It's nowhere near as Irrelevant as BHop vs. Roy Jones rematch - as much as I enjoy and respect both of those fighters

Are you saying this fight is somewhat irrelevant? This is the most relevant fight that can be made in boxing. It will prove once and for all who is the supreme welterweight and p4p boxer of our era. If mayweather doesn't fight pacquiao the only advantage he has over pacquiao is his undefeated record and compubox stats which dont mean much considering his type of opponents. Manny beats mayweather in every other aspect. 8 division champ to mayweathers 4. 3x fighter if the year to mayweathers 2x and fighter of the decade to nothing for mayweather. Manny also has the better wins on his resume. His fights were also much more exciting with knickdowns and knockouts pretty common even against elite opposition. Oscar is right, this fight could propel boxing back into the mainstream and make boxing as relevant as it was back in the 90s and before. There is no other fight in boxing that is more relevant. They are still number 1 and 2 p4p according to most sources. Doesn't get any more relevant than that.

Floyd has no plan of fighting Pacquiao on May. If it miraculously happens, Pac will destroy Floyd. Let me explain. See... 3 of Pac's last 4 fights he fought technical slick boxers. Algieri, Bradley and Marquez. While Floyd's last opponents are Maidana 2, Maidana 1, Guerrero, and Canelo. These are all one dimensional fighters. Slow, forward moving, flat footed fighters. None of these fights will help Floyd to prepare for Manny. Fighting flatfooted fighters to get ready for Pac is equivalent to 4 years of inactivity. Floyd didn't prepare for it coz he has no plan of fighting Pac...ever!

What the hell is slick about Bradley? And Marquez and Algeri have been down more than a hooker on prom night. You may knock Maidana but he's the kind of fighter to give a 38 year old Floyd problems. His big, physical, and he can back Floyd up. Mannys undersized, not very imposing physically, and technically inefficient. Not to mention the 6" reach advantage Floyd has.
