Put it this way... if I have reflexes and unorthodox skills as you call them... and another guy has AWESOME technical skills etc.. then we fight and I totally demolish him... what do his technical skills prove? Do people think Ali and RJ did things just off of reflex and not by design?Comment

jones wouldnt have gotten where he did if he didnt fight the way he didLast edited by opethdrums; 03-20-2006, 02:23 PM.Comment

i said roy doesnt have the classic boxing skills that say, james toney does. he was a very unorthodox fighter but still had amazing boxing skillsOriginally posted by ICEMAN JOHN SCULLYWHO says he didnt have good technical skills? Who says he didn't have "classic skills"? Who is to say what these things even are? Roy used A LOT of technique in the ring and he made it look GOOD, too.Comment

of course they did things of design, roy developed his own boxing style with the athletic gifts he was given. it worked damn well, tooOriginally posted by ICEMAN JOHN SCULLYPut it this way... if I have reflexes and unorthodox skills as you call them... and another guy has AWESOME technical skills etc.. then we fight and I totally demolish him... what do his technical skills prove? You are missing the point . My first sentence I said Roy jones was great . What people arent understanding is in the END of his career, he couldnt fight that way anymore (Unorthodox), He was still relying on those skills he had as a younger fighter and I think they werent there anymore . I think he could have continued to win as he got older if he used technical skill more then how he had been fighting in the past .Comment

[QUOTE=GasPed]You're right on - his "style" was completely built on his athleticism - his hands low let him launch power hooks from anywhere, but it relied on him being able to move to get out of harms way, instead of blocking with a guard. And it worked fantastically - for a while.
QUOTE]
Keyword . " For a while " HE could have continued to have success as a older boxer id he would have eveolved into a more technical boxer . thats all i was trying to say .
In the end what built his career was the very same things that made him lose the way he did in his last few fights .Comment

when someone lands every other punch precise and on the other guys jaw, i call that technique. roy jones had that.Originally posted by ICEMAN JOHN SCULLYWHO says he didnt have good technical skills? Ummm... YESOriginally posted by ICEMAN JOHN SCULLYPut it this way... if I have reflexes and unorthodox skills as you call them... and another guy has AWESOME technical skills etc.. then we fight and I totally demolish him... what do his technical skills prove? Sure everybody works on a gameplan. But do you teach your students to drop their hands, stick their chin out, lead w/ a power punch, lean back to avoid punches, stand straight up when their backs is against the ropes,etc.... That's what I thought!
Technical skills go out the window when someone has speed like a comet.
The one thing that I liked about RJJ's and Ali's "game" in their younger years was that they hardly went backwards and for the most part moved from side-to-side.Comment
