The World Boxing Council will allow Jorge Linares (38-3, 25KOs) to make a voluntary defense of the lightweight championship - and then he must make a mandatory defense against Kevin Mitchell (39-2, 29KOs).

Linares captured the vacant belt in December with a fourth round knockout of Javier Prieto. The belt became vacant when champion Omar Figueroa became injured and then made a decision to move up in weight to 140-pounds.

It's not his fault he couldn't get the fight with the champion Omar Figueroa this time though. the voluntary defense right now is no big deal. Hopefully it will be against Gamboa.
