Comments Thread For: Servania, Villanueva, Pagara Win Big in Davao City

The Pinoy’s pride remained in tact as three promising young AKA Gyn fighters whipped their Mexican opponents before a fantastic crowd at the University of Southeastern Philippines Gym in Davao City Saturday night.

In a fight card titled “Fists of Fury” telecast by the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN on its pre-eminent Channel 2 on Sunday morning, the widely watched TFC or The Filipino Channel “live” and was also seen on Sky Cable pay-per-view, WBO International junior welterweight champion Jason “El Nino” Pagara demolished hardened Mexican challenger Cesar “El Dolar” Chavez to score a crushing 2nd round TKO when internationally respected referee Bruce McTavish called a halt to the massacre at 1:56 of the round. Villanueva has disappointed me lately. He has looked horrible in 2 out of his last 3 fights against lesser opponents and in his most recent outting he finally handled his opposition the way he should have but then again... it was Miranda whom we are talking about here.

Jason Pagara beat down a fighter whom had little to no business in the ring that night. The guy was horribly overmatched and was bothered by damn near every single punch Jason threw at him. However, Pagara did seem poised and mature this time around but I agree with ALA, he needs to migrate to the US if he wants to achieve anything in boxing. The lack of quality sparring partners and opposition in the Philippines could be detrimental to his skills in the long run. Is he ready for a title shot? Nope. I would love to see him mix it up with fighters like Soto, John Molina, Dulorme, Lundy or even DeMarco just to truly gage where he is at... fighting the likes of "El Dolar" is just not going to cut it if he actually wants to taken as a serious contender.

Servania had a pitiful performance against Juan Luis Hernandez. The man had no power and aside from one fight in 2014.. he had been inactive since 2010. Seriously, Servania looked confused at times due to "The Black Pearl's" movement. He had no clue how to cut the ring off and when he did manage to corner his man and unload on him he would back off abruptly. Yup, he would be close to putting his man away and right before Hernandez seemed finished Servania stepped off the gas pedal and allowed his mismatched opponent to flurry back into contention. The scorecards were atrocious, to say the least. Hernandez may not have been a typical "mexican warrior" because he wasn't your average punchingbag but the movement he displayed had Servania dazed and confused for damn near 9 rounds. Even when he "stepped up" in the championship rounds he still managed to give Hernandez enough breathing room to survive. Seriously, something needs to be done. This young man is the #1 contender for Rigo's WBO strap? Hilarious, he would have absolutely no chance. Pagara is much better off in the game then Servania at this point in time.

Mark Magsayo did a great job and displayed some tactics that caught me off guard. The manner in which he feinted his right hand and lead with a left hook to the body was beautiful, but to top it off the KO punch was nothing short of outstanding. He landed a beautiful overhand right that followed the same feint he had been luring his opponent with in an early sequence. He may have quite a few things to work on but he has constantly showed growth. His counters were good and his sneaky uppercuts were nice but I noticed he seems to lose balance when throwing flurries, he's young so he has time to correct it. I really like the kid, I hope ALA grooms him well and gets him some quality sparring in the near future, he looks great for such a young prospect.

It was a lukewarm card, at best. Aside from Magsayo and Villanueva's return to the brighter side of the fence the other two performances were far from impressive. Let's see what the future has in store for these young men...
