French-Iranian Mahyar Monshipour lost the WBA 122 lb title to Thai Somsak Sitchatchawal on a tenth round tko last night in Levallois. Monshipour was down in the first but came back and was ahead on points after nine in what French media describes as a war, the toughest fight in France for decades, with both men staggered numerous times Sitchatchawal was however the stronger and hurt Monshipour in the sixth and finally in the tenth forcing British referee John Coyle to stop the fight. Monshipour-Sitchatchawal is a candidate for FOTY honours. Non-stop action from start to finish, these fighters just threw defense & safety into the dust bin and then proceeded to slug it out to the delight of the boxing fans. It's like watching Corrales-Castillo 1. Monshipour is a punching machine with a broken kill switch, he simply overwhelms his opponents with a barrage of powershots from all angles, too bad Somsak has a chin made of titanium! By rd.9 Mahyar was all done, exhausted...Somsak finally executed the French champ in rd. 10 with a heavy broadside of 10 unanswered powerpunches, dunno what kept him standing, but he was obviously punch-drunk at that point, the ref had to stop it. The home crowd was silent, shocked.
