Comments Thread For: Paul Smith Backs Froch's Decision on DeGale/Chavez

Super middleweight Paul Smith, who challenges WBO champion Arthur Abraham in a rematch later this month, believes Matchroom stablemate Carl Froch made the right decision to vacate his IBF world title on Tuesday in order to focus on a summer showdown with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in Las Vegas. Olympic gold medal winner James DeGale, also under contract with Matchroom, was Froch's mandatory challenger.

Froch vs Chavez Jr would be an interesting fight if only Chavez Jr beats a top 10 168 guy first. Right now, we all have his two struggles vs Brian Vera fresh in our heads. Beating Fonfora is good, but is that fight at 168 or 175? So far JCC has been fighting guys in weights they don't belong.

Froch's last fight was in front of 80,000 people at Wembley and he made £9million.

Why would he go back to 20,000 at the O2 Arena for half that purse when he can fight in Vegas in the summer?

Logical decision. DeGale can make history without him.

Is Smith still British champion? He's not defended in eons!

I don't blame Froch at all.

            Degale isn't making 'history' either.
