ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - For the first time in his career, Hasim Rahman fought like he wanted to be heavyweight champion of the world. That was too bad for James Toney on Saturday night at Boardwalk Hall. The judges, however, did not reward Rahman for his effort, nor did they punish him.

After a 12-round battle, the judges scored the fight a draw, allowing Rahman (42-5-2, 33 KOs) to retain his WBC heavyweight crown and to become the man to beat in the division. Judges Tom Kaczmarek and Nabuaki Uranti scored it 114-114, while judge John Stewart scored it 117-111 for Rahman. The New York Daily News scored it 115-113 for Rahman.

116-112 for Rahman is how I scored the fight.

I'm more than sure plenty of people kept giving Toney repeated 10-6 rounds for laying on the ropes, and rolling his shoulders.

Toney was 237 two days ago... Does anyone know his unoffical weight last night? He looked like he was 245lbs.

Rahman, with superior punching power, longer reach and bigger size could not decisively defeat the overweight and smaller James Toney.

The Draw is justified. Niether man beat the other decisively.

Rahman did enough to win the fight just not decisively enough to get a decision from two of the judges. No judge saw Toney winning the fight which by default shows Rahamn actually won.

Technically a draw should not exist in boxing because when a fight is fully analyzed one boxer or the other by however small a margin should be the winner- but time is critical and that would take too long so a draw is the accepted result when the margins of victory appear to be so close through the eyes of a judge.

Keys to this fight being ruled Draw-

Don King - He has a personal reason against Rahman who used to fight in his stable. King has money and power in boxing and could try to control outcomes of fights when they go to a decision. (I do not think he does)

Draw- All about Money. Both boxing camps lose nothing and everyone but the fan is a winner. Gives opportunity for more lucrative rematches or other matchups for both boxers- potential PPVs, another payday for everyone in a rematch, continued marketability and high pay days for both promoters and boxing teams

Judges- Know the politics of boxing which is all about money.
Safety in ruling the fight a draw.
Manipulation (ie money from someone to influence the outcome under the table before the fight or after is unlikely ?)
Tend to have personal bias and favor one fighter over the other.
Usually are easier on a long reigning champ, crowd favorite and the media ordained favorite/winner in the pre-fight hoobla.

No science, instant replay or analyzation goes into the judges decisions- specifically no time spent watching the fight from the tapes in seclusion and reaching a verdict. But doing that would change the sport because current judging as we know it is an integral part of boxing.

Rahman to win by decision with the other two judges needed to be more energetic/physical in the final rounds punching Toney and backing him up around the ring but he was understandably tired.

As it was Rahman should of had a UD or MD. Rahman outboxed and clearly was the aggressor throughout the fight, Toney backed away and fought on the ropes whenever possible.

All that being said Toney showed endurance, cunning, appeared no more exhausted than Rahman, not as bloody as Rahman was, and definately able to take the punches.

I want to see Toney 5' 9" fight Valuev 7' 2" for the entertainment and could Toney actually win or maybe get a draw ?

no he didnt. it was a draw, as it was properly scored.

rahman cant beat an overweight toney when rock is in the best shape in years, that should tell you that rock just doesnt have what it takes to be a real champion.
