Rahman and Toney last night showed us just how bad some of these so-called "champions" really are. If you think last night's fight was championship-caliber, how about I kick you in the nuts right before I let you watch the first Bowe-Holyfield fight. With the exception of Wlad and Brewster, the heavyweight division is nothing but a bunch of plodding big men.Comment

If you compare it to his past performances, this was one of rocks best performances IMO and james still seemed to get the draw, although it could have went either way. Rahman pressed on and on and never seemed to get weary, and even at the end of the fight didn't look as gassed as I have seen him in past fights. he was in great shape Rahman fought a very good fight last night, its just that toney is such a skilled fighter its hard to adapt to his style.Comment

Yea but it was against a very slick and skilled fighter. It was a test for both, and even though james didn't show up in good shape he stilled displayed the skills that has defined his career against an opponent who is expierienced in the heavyweight division.. Rahman showed and displayed the best he had to offer, ive never seen him fight like he did. Even though his career is defined by his KO win against lewis, if rahman fought every heavyweight title fight like he did against james toney.. he has a chance of unifying them. You have to understand that it is hard to land a right hand, rahmans best punch, against a slick counter puncher like james toney. we need to see a rematch!!Comment

well, i never believed rahman to be a bum, but i don't see him as a top tier heavyweight or as a fighter capable of being a major force in the current division.
i would say that rahman most certainly did not fight the smartest fight. hasim definitely fell for a lot of toney's little veteran tricks. now, that raises a question - did rahman even study toney's previous fights? it seems like his trainers were the only guys that new better than to follow toney into the ropes. in fact they had mentioned it many times, yet for some reason rahman persisted in following toney around. for an experienced veteran that hasim is supposed to be, he sure seems to have a low ring IQ. and i didn't even mention the phonebooth style of fighting which rahman should've avoided as it's another one of toney's strengths.
while i certainly agree with most people that rahman should've won, he clearly made it harder than it needed to be. and rahman's own trainers had said virtually the exact same thing i was thinking while watching the fight - "you're making it harder than it has to be." i definitely feel that rahman should've kept jt at the end of his punches and maintained a good amount of space between him and jt throughout the fight for the most part.
i've already established that i felt toney should've lost, but even if i felt that it was a legit draw, that is not a compliment for hasim rahman - a natural and more experienced heavyweight who has been in the ring with the likes of tua, a slightly younger holyfield, and lennox lewis.Comment
