This fight makes no sense for Gonzalez. There's bigger fights with mares, nonito, walters,or even loma. He has a title so why the hell is he fighting Russell. And what the hell has Russell done to earn this fight. ****** move by the mexican. Just plain ******

Jhonny must be paid handsomely because he has nothing to gain from this fight. High risk-low reward (except financial) as Russell Jr. has never beaten someone you can call good. That being said, I'd rather watch this fight than Jhonny milking his title against overmatched opponents (Atwell, Arce).

        Excellent post, I completely agree.

I think if Jhonny lands something, he might be able to put Russel away. GR Jr has flashy hand speed but not much else. In the Loma fight(which I thought Gary would take) he showed his lack of in ring IQ, something that is needed against a lanky, technical and hard punching boxer puncher the likes of Jhonny.

Gary's handspeed won't be a factor in this fight, his T-Rex arms are too short to box from a distance and Jhonny has a 6 inch reach advantage to top it off.

        Prediction: Jhonny via KO.

You make some valid points but I have to go with the younger, fresher fighter. Russell Jr. by UD.

Jhonny is past his best and as it has been pointed out already, his record against southpaws doesn't look good at all: Vargas (twice), Penalosa, Nishioka, Ponce de Leon, Osejo (for those who watched the fight). Without counting the two losses at the very beginning of his career, 5 of his 6 losses have come against southpaws. It's hard to believe this is just a coincidence.

Russell's people must've offered some good money for this fight.

True his records against southpaws doesn't look appealing but he didn't just go out on his shield against them. In fact, since teaming up with Nacho Beristain in 09 he hasn't done bad for himself. Sure he is inconsistent in his performances but has racked up some good names since his loss to Nishioka and has reclaimed his belt after KOing Mares, who was in the top 10 PFP rankings coming into the fight.

In other words, he has a hard time against world class southpaws, Russel isn't there just yet. I could be completely wrong but I don't see how Russel would be able to cut the distance to unload his combinations... since you know, his T rex arms are doing him no favors lol. In the mid to long distance it's all Jhonny's game, unless he shows up on an off night, I can't see him losing to Gary.

Anyway, that's your opinion and I respect it completely. You have good points as well in your argument. Honestly, whoever comes out victorious is fine with me. I like both fighters and what they bring to the table, it just sucks that if Gonzalez loses his strap.. we might never get to see Mares vs Gonzalez II.

I have a feeling Gonzalez will destroy Russell.

Did both Kuchle's screw up taking a bout vs a fast lefty??? No$$ amount , curious what pay JG gets, I'd guess $250k, not much tv xposure or real interest in this.

A location not named. And what about poor Robindon, mandatory & left out in the cold.
