World Boxing Council featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez (57-8, 48KOs) says a fight with Gary Russell Jr. (25-1, 14KOs) is nearly 90% complete. The fight would be part of a three fight agreement between Gonzalez's promoter Osvaldo Kuchle of Mexico and Russell's manager Al Haymon. If Gonzalez wins, he would get a summer rematch with Abner Mares and then a fall fight with Leo Santa Cruz. The fight with Russell may take place on March 28th.

-Russell Jr is ranked in the top 15 by the WBC
-Jhonny has a voluntary defense available
-Jhonny has a mandatory due next
-a fight with Russel gets him a good payday, while also lining up another big payday for the Mares rematch (possibly on the September Mayweather card, after satisfying the mandatory defense in the summer)
