Comments Thread For: Chavez Sr: Fonfara Will Prepare My Son For Carl Froch

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has a very tough fight ahead, when he faces Polish light heavyweight contender Andrzej Fonfara on April 18th. Chavez Sr. says the contest is taking place at a catch-weight of 172-pounds at a venue in either Las Vegas or Los Angeles. For Chavez Jr. (48-1-1, 32KO), the fight with Fonfara (26-3, 15KO) will be his first ring appearance in over a year.

Froch and Fonfara don't really fight similarly at all.

Since Junior weighs in as heavy as a cruiserweight on fight night, why is this fight at a catch weight of 172 pounds? Can I assume it is to put Fonfara at a disadvantage because he has to lose more weight then he usually does?

When has Jr come in at 210+ lbs?

There was a huge contrast between his weight (one eighty something) and Martinez who is on the border between 154 and 160 and barely cuts, but otherwise he's not THAT big for his divisions. He will never see a gap that big again.

Agreed. There are really no similarities. Froch, while not fast has great timing and power on his punches. The right hand especially. I can't recall seeing Chavez ever visibly hurt by anybody he has faced, but I think that will be tested in a fight with Froch. Not so much with Fonfara.

I am not sure what Sergio has do with how much Junior weighs? And did I miss something because I hadn't realized that the cruiserweight weight limit was changed to 210 plus pounds? As I had asked Junior usually comes in on fight night weighing in over 180 pounds (criuserweight) so why the catch weight?

What cruiser comes in at 185 lbs, on fight night? The catchweight is dumb but I don't think it will be much of a factor.

On a recent interview on "A Los Golpes", Chavez Jr answered the question about the catchweight. He gave a hasty answer and claimed he needs it since he has never fought at 175 lbs. I don't recall if it was Junior or Senior that stated if the fight was at 175 it would be too much of an advantage for Fonfara. Since they want it to be fair, meeting somewhere in the middle would be the best option, well.... according to them.

Julio Cesar "About Blunts" Chavez Jr cracks me up. Kid is such a dope

People keep sleeping on chavez jr. Yea hes a lazy f^ck, but imo if he trains with 100% effort and dedication, he can be a nightmare for anybody. Has his fathers stamina, punch output (almost, since hes lazy), but he has a hell of a better chin than his father. Ill only put my pts on him if he is 100%. So you can say thats once in a blue.

If a cruiserweight decides to fight at 180 he can but that wasn't even my point. The point is that Junior can easily make weight as a cruiserweight therefore he should have no problem making 175 as a light heavyweight. So in my opinion there really is no need for a catch weight. And I'm not going to say it will happen but we have seen, in the not so distant past, the disadvantage it puts the fighter that has to lose more weight then usual.
