If the champion refuses to fight the next guy, then he should be stripped.

That might have been part of it but it was not a good solution. Now there is lots of confusion especially to people who don't follow boxing. Try to explain to them who the champion is. Yawns are sure to follow.

You are correct, sir. ....or, at least that was the premise for a few sharp sharks to start their own scam.

The plain fact is "ducking" has always been around for one reason or another.

Casual boxing fan's eyes glaze over...heavy blinking...turns the conversation toward the SuperBowl where they will have guess how many?

        One champion.
I understand what you're saying, and it is very confusing for casual viewers, but I don't think shrinking the scope of sport and essentially dumbing it down is the way forward. The sanctioning bodies need to start working together more to make the unification fights happen so we have a consensus champion.

But just having one belt per division wouldn't be a good thing for boxing.

Dumbing it down or simplifying it?

          People get simple.

Simple is best. Make three of the belts regional and have one "World" champion. Problem solved.

Ducking would still happen with one title. The whole reason we have 500 title-issuing organizations is the champ was ducking fighters (usually foreign ones where the organizations are based) so a new belt would be invented for the fighters being ducked to fight for.

It really wouldn't make any difference.

One title means that all the American champions would lose their titles since they're all paper champions.
