They have techniques to detect CTE in living brain tissue, but it'll be years before it's approved by FDA (sooner in Europe).
An experimental positron emission tomography (PET) tracer is effective in diagnosing concussion-related brain disease while a person is still alive. A new study suggests that an experimental radiolabeled compound, which is designed to latch onto a protein called tau that accumulates in the brain with repetitive blows to the head, can be registered on a PET scanner to effectively diagnose chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).
Cleveland Clinic is putting together some less definitive series of tests that'll incorporate behavior as well as the typical (and essentially useless) brain scans.
Detecting CTE in brain before death could be a huge deal. Could also potentially make many many boxers and NFL players ineligible to play. The thing with football and NFL is, it's always in practice where these guys hit each other the hardest. You brain can be developing CTE before a pro even gets on the field.
I hope Taylor gets the help he needs, but I think people are just going to want to throw him to the sharks. If it is indeed CTE, which if its not drugs, it has to be, this is not his fault at all.Comment

So sad. Big Taylor fan here. Sounds like he has major issues. Probably substance abuse. He's in need of help in a big way.
He'll probably be locked up for years now though.Comment
