Comments Thread For: Bermane Stiverne-Deontay Wilder: Post-Fight Report Card

Three things are true about Deontay Wilder:

He now has a belt at Heavyweight, he is far from the fraud some insisted he was, and he still has a long ways to go.

    One thing is not true:

He is not the Heavyweight Champion of the World.

On Saturday night in Las Vegas, Wilder won the WBC belt with a dominant decision over Bermane Stiverne. To be the champion, one day he’ll have to defeat Wladimir Klitschko. Nothing seen this weekend indicates Wilder is ready for that feat.

There were signs that he might get there.

Take away the belt and what Saturday really boiled down to is Wilder won his biggest step up in competition to date. Stiverne is his first win over someone universally seen as a top ten Heavyweight. It’s a start. [Click Here To Read More]

I'd like to see Wilder v Pulev before Fury. Pulev would have the height and reach to crack him on the chin. I wouldn't like to see Wilder v Cunningham.

Post fight defense and Stiverne gets a B? The sheer number of three punch combinations that Deontay landed on Stiverne should drop Stiverne defense grade to a D+ at best. Just because Stiverne has a head hard enough to break Wilder's fist doesn't boost that D+ to a B. And, Stiverne was knocked down at the end of round two. Some defense. Only Tony (week eyes) Weeks could have missed that one.

Wilder after the first couple rounds hit a lot of glove. He was trying to throw around them all night. The clean shots were limited by the high guard.

Saturday was Wilder's first test and he passed it with Flying colors. Fighters become better after winning their first title, they say. The sky is the limit from here on out for him.

Imagine if we get Wilder/Fury AND Wilder/Klitchko in 2015

Agreed. Wilder landed 53% of his power on Stiverne. That was no B level defense.
