Dela Hoya wants to promote Pacquiao

CEBU CITY — Boxing superstar Oscar De La Hoya has expressed interest in working as the new promoter of Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao in his projected rematch with Mexican Marco Antonio Barrera.
According to Golden Boy Promotions Vice-President Eric Gomez, they have already informed Pacquiao’s American manager Shelly Finkel about their desire to work with Pacquiao.
Gomez also added that Barrera is willing to face Pacquiao if given the chance to do so.
The Dela Hoya group learned that Pacquiao ended his association with American promoter Gary Shaw after the Erik Morales fight last March.
Gomez said that they are still waiting for Pacquiao to give his consent to Finkel in working out a deal with the Dela Hoya group.
Gomez and promoter Sampson Lewkowicz arrived in the country Wednesday morning from Las Vegas to do a separate business deal with their Filipino counterparts Tony Aldeguer and Sammy Gello-ani.
Gomez revealed that they already reached an agreement with Finkel to have Larios battle Pacquiao in the Philippines middle of this year.
They were, however, surprised when they received a call yesterday from Finkel and simply said that the deal is off. Finkel reportedly gave no reason for the withdrawal.
Gomez however remains optimistic that another round of discussion will happen and that Larios, who is said to be eager to come to the Philippines, will eventually get to fight Pacquiao.
Gomez also divulged that they have already reserved a November 4 date from HBO for Barrera to fight Pacquiao.
Their main option is to use that date for a potential rematch with Pacquiao in an anticipated 12-round war at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
"Marco badly wants that fight and wants to get his revenge" said Gomez in an interview yesterday.
Gomez added that they prefer to stage the much-awaited rematch in that date to give both fighters ample time to prepare and stamp out any excuses.
Barrera is scheduled to defend his World Boxing Council (WBC) superfeatherweight crown against former Olympian Ricardo ‘Rocky’ Juarez in a 12-round title fight at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Morales has been insisting that their third fight will be at 132 lbs. and not at 130 lbs.
Pacquiao said that for a rubber match to happen, they will still fight at 130 lbs.
