Comments Thread For: Deontay Wilder Returns Heavyweight Gold To America

By Jake Donovan - It’s been nearly eight years since an American heavyweight has enjoyed title status, but the drought came to an end on Saturday evening, when Deontay Wilder upended Bermane Stiverne over 12 rounds at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The biggest upset of the night was the fact that the bout—which aired live on SHOWTIME—went all 12 scheduled rounds. Boxing observers were almost evenly split in trying to pick a winner, though nearly everyone agreed that it would end in a vicious knockout in six rounds or less.

Wilder has a flair for pulling off the improbable, though. Few if anyone believed he would capture a medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, much less serve as the only fighter from the U.S. Olympic boxing team that year to bring home hardware. [Click Here To Read More]

It's amazing, an entire country called Ukraine has to start crumbling with a opportunistic boxer stepping in to enhance his political ambitions, in order for an American to return Heavyweight gold to America.

He's returned a quarter of a fifth of the true championship to America, he can only be crowned as heavyweight champion if he beats Wlad or beats the guy who beats Wlad.

I think Deontay would be a tough out for the Vitali I last saw in a boxing ring, and that was over two years ago. I doubt he would have done much better than Stiverne last night.

Yes sir,he definitely needs to work on those stick legs, I'd say a minimum 15 lbs of muscle to his legs . He generates so much power because of his length, imagine if his base was solid,he'd seriously hurt many of these heavyweights.

I wish folks would stop trying to spit knowledge and explain how Wilder has to beat Wlad to be the true champ. Everyone on this forum is well aware that there isn't a more dominant or unquestioned champ in any division than Wlad. The excitement over Wilder has nothing to do with a belt, at least not in the hardcore community. The excitement is that we have an American heavyweight that is legit, at least in this era. And that we have an American heavyweight that MIGHT be able to challenge Wlad for supremacy in the division.

Deontay brought a belt back to the US. It means nothing. Wlad is the HWT champ until he retires or gets beat.
