Comments Thread For: Tom Hoover to Chair New York State Athletic Commission

By Thomas Hauser - New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced today that Tom Hoover will be the next chairperson of the New York State Athletic Commission. Hoover will replace Melvina Lathan, who was appointed by Governor David Patterson in 2008.

Lathan’s tenure was marked by controversy, particularly with regard to fighter safety. The New York State Inspector General’s Office began an investigation of commission practices after Russian heavyweight Magomed Abdusalamov received what is alleged to have been inadequate medical care in conjunction with a November 2, 2013, bout against Mike Perez at Madison Square Garden. Abdusalamov suffered a cerebral hemorrhadge and lapsed into a coma after the contest. He will be seriously impaired for life. A lawsuit against the NYSAC and commission personnel is pending.

The Inspector General’s investigation soon broadened into a deeper study of the NYSAC during Lathan’s tenure. A scathing report is expected to be issued shortly. [Click Here To Read More]

I hope so, but I'm not optimistic. This is a Government entity, and those have a horrible record when it comes to doing the jobs they are supposed to do.

Look at pro sports today. The biggest sports today like basketball, baseball, and football all choose their own referees/officials themselves. Sure, you get a blown call or a crooked ref every once in a while, but boxing has been a joke for decades. We keep seeing robberies over and over. Refs like Laurence Cole and Russell Mora still keep reffing fights. Judges who turn in cards showing incompetence at best, and corruption at worse, rarely get fired or suspended.

Sure, I'd love for the officiating to be on par with the sports who police themselves, but I wont hold my breath.
