  • Comments Thread For: Malignaggi Explains The Support, Advantages of Al Haymon

Al Haymon is viewed as the most powerful man in boxing. The manager/adviser has around 150 fighters in his stable, which includes the pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Recently, Haymon parted ways with Golden Boy Promotions, who housed quite a number of his fighters. Haymon is scheduled to begin a brand new television series with NBC/NBC Sports in March. Many of the fighters in his stable are expected to be a part of this series.

As i've said before, I don't like Al Haymon but I gotta give it to the guy on the business side. No guy looks out for the fighters best interest like Al as far as getting his fighters top dollar. Hate the guy, but he takes care of his guys financially. How the heck he does it, I don't know. Dude could sell water to a whale in the middle of the ocean

Maximizing earning potential by making mismatches or even turning down career paydays in order to stifle his competition.

I don't even think Paulie has met Al Haymon which just goes to show people can be bought.

Haymon's actions aren't exactly altruistic. He gets a cut of every deal his fighters get, so it makes sense to get them the best deals possible. The bigger their purse, the bigger his cut. I do agree though, it is pretty amazing how he has seamlessly moved from HBO and Showtime and somehow hypnotised Greenburg and Espinoza to wildly overpay his fighters on both.

Also, as we have seen with him making Quillin turn down the Roc deal, he's not always looking out for the fighters interests. That was a power move, plain and simple.

This whole Haymon model is not sustainable, I don't care how smart he is. You can't have that big a stable and keep persuading everyone to overpay them.

Top rank and golden boy also pay their fighters very well. You never hear people from top rank or golden boy complaining about their pay. Even when their is a dispute like Mikey Garcia, he still said he was happy with the way top rank has guided his career.

A fighter with a top promoter will get paid what they are worth regardless. Tim Bradley got paid 2 million to fight Diego Chavez, which is more than the total amount of purses paid to the fighters in the ShowTime card the same night. Amir khan got something like 900k while Devin Alexander got 650k. Top rank pays their fighters well too. Al haymon promises his fighters alot but doesn't deliver. He is ruining his fighters careers.
