Comments Thread For: Roc Nation Sports - The Great Experiment

By Thomas Gerbasi - In many ways it doesn’t seem like it was more than 14 years ago, but in others – like when the wife says something to me and I don’t hear her - Thunderbox feels like it was just yesterday.

For those who don’t remember, Thunderbox was the baby of promoter Cedric Kushner, an attempt to marry the worlds of music and boxing and mix in a tournament format. It was a noble attempt, but it was – in a word – bad. And in another, LOUD. As in your laptop is shaking loud.

The winners of that first night’s tournament in September of 2000, were four of the heavyweight division’s usual suspects from that era – Ray Austin, Cisse Salif, Charles Hatcher, and Ron Brown. Jameel McCline and Al Cole were also on the card, but the real stars were the performers of the night, Wyclef Jean and the Black Eyed Peas.

Did I mention that it was loud?

Give credit to Kushner for trying to bring a younger crowd and a different demographic to the fights, and the same can be said for HBO’s series from around that time, KO Nation, but it just didn’t work, with attendance and television ratings likely to back up my thoughts. I doubt it. Both of them are extremely established in the business and both have some of the biggest attractions in the sport under their banners. Roc Nation on the other hand is just now learnin how to crawl. Aiming for the "urban" fan base is all wrong, Roc Nation should establish themselves as a force in the sport, not just another gimmicky promotional company.

They may have the money, but they don't have anything else. Boxing fans for he most par don't seem to belong to that crowd, and most go to a boxing event for the fights, not the glitz and glam. Best of luck to them doe, I just hope they don't reel in anymore ******ed fans, boxing has enough with you

God those Thunderbox shows were rough to watch. Cedric Kushner and his obsession with HW's was destined for failure.

Not sure rap concerts are going to generate a younger audience, but Roc Nation has the money & tv dates to try out things. In Germany, the big shows are all about a social event. People don't care so much who Sturm or Wlad fight, so much as they're getting what they perceive is a 'big event'. Same could be said of many of Mayweather's fights.

This is good for the sport, I hope Roc Nation is successful in their 3 dates that they have.

Anything that can help the sport of boxing get more fans, I'm All For It! Boxing desperately need to reach that young demographic, something they really haven't been able to do as of LATE.

Only time I see young kids talk boxing is when Justin Beiber walks out with Mayweather
