Long before 1989, Ditka's hips were shot (career related wear and tear), in fact years after this 1989 dinner, I saw Ditka at some presentation - in a small group of former pro football stars - when suddenly as a joke one of them turned around to face Ditka and playfully shoved him backwards. Ditka fell down as if his hips were worthless - those of a crippled grandpa or a marionette. This I believe happened after his hip replacement surgery, but it was still sad to see.
