Police: Denver boxer Mike Alvarado arrested on weapons charge
Denver boxer Mike Alvarado was arrested early Saturday morning downtown on a felony warrant and su****ion of being a convicted felon in possession of a weapon after officers found a handgun in the glove box of his Hummer during a traffic stop.
Alvarado, arguably the most famous Denver boxer of all time, was stopped by police about 4:15 a.m. near the intersection of 19th and Stout streets after an officer found the car to have expired registration.
Police say Alvarado appeared to be pushing something into the glove box when they approached the car, court records show. Officers ran a records check on Alvarado finding he was wanted on a felony warrant and a traffic offense out of Adams County.
Officers arrested Alvarado and then searched his car, finding a Taurus handgun inside the glove box, records show.
Alvarado was read his Miranda rights and declined to speak with police before he was taken to jail, police said. Records show he posted $41,500 bond and has been released.
Alvarado fights in the light welterweight and welterweight division and has been ranked internationally.
