Comments Thread For: Photos: Takashi Uchiyama Turns Back Israel Perez

Unbeaten champion Takashi Uchiyama of Japan has fended off a challenge from Israel Perez of Argentina to defend his World Boxing Association super featherweight title for the ninth time.

The veteran Japanese, 35, remained in control throughout Wednesday's bout, sending a barrage of body punches towards his challenger, also 35, who kept his guards high.

In the eighth and ninth rounds, Uchiyama showed off furious charges, putting Perez into a corner.

Japan is a deceptively great boxing nation. Per capita, their fighters do very very well

They also happen to have 130+ Million Habitants there that's more then Mexico, and Mexico is like 4 times larger then Japan. My only problem with Japanese boxers is that they never leave home.

Uchiyama is one of the top p4p fighters in the sport. Only the likes of Klitschko or mayweather have been equally as dominant over the same stretch of time

Japan is only larger to Mexico in population by a small margin, and they have about 127 million people, to Mexicos 122 million. The fact they never leave home is a big part of their lack of marketing. look at that Inoue guy, no one knows who he is and he just won 2 titles in two different weight classes in one year. Something only greats do, Japan is a very good boxing nation. They are like Russia.
