Is it too late to start boxing competitively at 22 years old? Opinions please.

I am 22 and a half years old and I want to start boxing, probably need to have an amateur career for a couple of years.

I been training martial arts for 9 years and have competed in full contact bare knuckle tournaments, so I already have a solid base understanding of how to punch and to utilise my body plus footwork and movement.

Boxing is a lot different as the style of punches are different, but I feel that I would be able to pick it up much easier than someone with no fighting experience.

Do you guys think its too late to start a career or should I just stick to my desk job in a suit?

Also, I am 5 ft 5 (165cm) and 154lbs (70kg) - currently a Super welterweight. What weight class should I be fighting in?

This video is of the style I fought in (no head punches as as it is bare knuckle. This would be a major difference to boxing):

I'd say that at your height you would be at a large height disadvantage at light middle. But an amateur career for two or three years minimum would be necessary. If you pick it up quick and get some fights under your belt at anateur level then you could see how you do as a pro. Adonis Stevenson doesn't have an extensive amateur career and he is doing well. I would say you should train at amateur for a few years first. With the new scoring system in place the ams are better suited to preparing people for the pros

      It's never too late.

However, it takes years for a boxer to develop.

Your weight class? I'd say Middleweight.

There is a guy named Lord Golovkin in that division, dude hurts people for living.

But seriously, good luck, bro. You've got the right attitude.

Lol thankfully he is light Middle. But he may lose a bit more weight through training. Of course guys like dwight qawi was a beast even though he was short for his weight

          Middleweight? No f'n way.

Get yourself down to Lightweight or light welterweight.

It's not too late, especially if you've already done martial arts and other combat sports, but it's not optimal as most essential things in boxing take years upon years to develop properly.

If you're a quick learner, you could do it.

He's a JMW now, give him few months to develop some lean muscle mass (which he will, because every boxer does) and he's a Middleweight.

Yeah I know, I need to be down at a lower weight for my height. Can't see myself going down past 140 pounds. Even at that weight you still get some really tall skinny guys.

I'll give it a shot but, thanks.

I'd say at the moment, I look like Cornelius K9 Bundrage, except my arms are not as long.

Most "normal" people can lose 10kgs. but you can't just think of it as a normal weight loss. Your trainers will get you a good understanding of how a proper weight loss should take place. There are certain muscle groups that can afford to lose weight like your legs without it taking too much away.

You have to be disciplined though.
