Wow I don't know how to describe that fight.....for me they were the two best pound for pound fighters in the world at that time....and they were actually fighting each other...people talk about classics like Hagler-Hearns, Ali-Frazier but Benn-Mclellan will never be on any DVD of classic fights, far too brutal.....very sad, Gman should have been pulled out after round 4 or 5, the punches he was allowed to take we're unforgivable.
Just watched Benn vs Mccllelan agian....

I remember watching it with some friends, easily the most brutal fight I've ever seen. Benn looked like getting smashed in those first couple of rounds. It was an amazing show of power and determination from both fighters, just so tragic it ended like it did. -
Just wanna add, for me Mclellan never lost anything that night. He fought til the bitter end, that moment he was no his knee blinking will always haunt me. That was the bravest fight I'd ever seen, he was fighting for his life after the early rounds and he never gave up.Comment

Incredible fight, the best in British boxing history, IMO - but it's a lost, little-discussed fight for obvious reasons. I remember seeing that fight live in front of my TV. I still remember noticing G-Man's blinking, and being spooked by it.
I re-visit it once a year but with trepidation - it just makes me so sad. But then I know that through all of the sadness, I can still marvel at Gerald's incredible bravery and guts (and Benn's too).Comment

GMan is forever a warrior, I look up to his courage, what an amazing feat he achieved that night, I can't even begin to imagine what he was going through.Last edited by Tedkidlewis; 12-26-2014, 08:02 AM.Comment

Interesting fight...one thing we should learn from that fight is if a fighter is blinking, has his gum shield hanging out, tapping his eye like he's bleeding when he's not....get him the hell out of of there, boxing is dangerous, it is just not worth the risk....get that guy to hospital ASAP.Last edited by Tedkidlewis; 12-26-2014, 09:12 AM.Comment

Nigel Benn.......
Nigel Benn is a punk and a cheat. I refuse to watch this fight, ever again. The referee allowed Benn to paralyze, GM. PERIOD. All of the behind the head and brain-stem that Benn did, almost killed GM. There was nothing "great" about Benn or what he did. No fighter deserves that. This is what happens when you fight on foreign soil. Back then, boxing didn't have medical staffs in place to handle bizarre incidents, such as this. Smh. This was so sad and tragic and could've been avoided. "F" Nigel Benn. The way he arrogantly talked trash after the fight as if it was his skill that knocked GM unconscious. What a F-A-G!Comment

It's very sad to see what happened with the G man, I always said he was one of the best middleweights I ever saw. Ever. He was absolutely tremendous and he had the frame to move up to Supermiddle and probably light heavy too.
the fight itself was epic. I haven't seen it in a while but obviously Benn was my personal boyhood hero and seeing him sc**** himself off the canvas and been put through the ropes in the first round was crazy. Absolute war.
Add a crazy McClellan corner (understatement), knockdowns on either side, Don king ringside and an underdog win. Great fight.Comment

Benn was picked to get killed by the mini mike tyson and obviously was over the moon having just won what should have been the fight of the decade. He had no way of knowing what happened, and if you knew anything about Benn you'd know that he went into a deep depression and was suicidal after that fight.
If you want to blame anyone, you should blame the drunking 'captain' of McClellans corner and who else was in there. They didn't know wtf was going on and allowed him to fight on even though it was obvious he was non responsive.
Benn is a fighter, he fights. And also, McClellan wasn't exactly a clean fighter himself.Comment
