Comments Thread For: Who's The Champ v. Who's The Best, Part IV

By Jake Donovan - Part four of this ongoing series examines the champions and the recognized best in the lightweight, super lightweight, welterweight and super welterweight divisions.

Unlike the four weight classes below lightweight, all four divisions in this section feature true champions. But are they also the very best in their respective weight classes?

Perhaps more important, will any of the four still be in position to offer stability – or land the type of fights that can threaten such reigns and present a changing of the guard?

Terence Crawford presented the division with its first true lineal champ since Juan Manuel Marquez officially abandoned the weight class in April ’12 (although his last fight at 135 came in Nov. ’10). The unbeaten fighting pride of Nebraska gained recognition by BoxingScene.com and Transnational Ratings Board (TBRB) as the World lightweight champion following his 12-round boxing clinic of veteran #2 rated Raymundo Beltran over the Thanksgiving weekend in Omaha, Nebraska. Canelo shouldn't even be considered as the best at 154. He is very beatable, as Mayweather and Lara both showed.

Guys that I would take over Canelo include: Lara in a rematch. Demetrius Andrade and both Charlo brothers.

What is the author asking these writers when they vote, who they think is the best or who is recognised as the best?

Because if it's the former, a 10 sweep vote for Crawford, Garcia and Mayweather seems very partial. Then inexplicably Canelo gets 4 votes after losing clearly to Mayweather and not fighting in the division since.

The guy that used steroid PEDs to build his name, been gifted decisions (I.e. Marquez), fights washed-up,beat-up, messed-up, puffed-up softies, then ducks the best opponent in Mayweather (afraid of needles at the time). Who's the biggest fraud? Get real!

if baldomir had never fought floyd and only fought tune ups he would still be the best. this is clearly a great system.

The specific question asked to each writer polled was whom they personally consider to be the best in the division.

Those who voted for Canelo at 154 considered Mayweather to be a full-time welterweight (still recognizing him as champ, but not as a true/active 154 lb. fighter).

Crawford, Garcia and Mayweather (147) were no-brainers.
