Why not hit with the 2nd knuckles?

Jack Dempsey said never hit with the door knocking knuckles since they are too weak.

But I have found from practice that they are extremely strong/ robust.

Also they are used to strike with in the martial arts a lot too, and while a lot of traditional martial arts don't pack as much power as a boxer a lot of them still use hip rotation etc so its quite close in power.

You could use them to strike with a longer hook, it would work especially well in MMA, because I don't think they even have any padding on the 2nd knuckles.

First of all it's best for this to be in the training and nutrition group.

But tbh you are more likely to injure those two knuckles and the transfer of power is said to be greater when you land with the last 3 knuckles. Although your two knuckles may be robust and could be used it's been tested through time that the last three are best to hit with.

there is less support for those knuckles

you have the wrist to cushion the blow with the traditional set of knuckles

Martial artists strike bare hand with the first two. Practice, pratice, practice. Toughen up your two knuckles with makiwara training. Its been done this way for thousands of years for this reason, while hitting with the 3 knuckles is better only when using gloves. If you punch with 3 knuckles bare hand in a street fight you'll break your 5th metacarpus.

Something to do with the index finger's knuckle being directly supported by your fore arm init? I dunno, try hitting things with the last 3, see what happens?

I think the first post is referring to the "knuckles" in the bend of the fingers and not the actual knuckles.

You are supposed to punch with the two knuckles on the two fingers next to the thumb with a closed fist in boxing, the wrist should be lined up behind the fist, punching with any other part of the hand repeatedly will leave the hands much more open to injury.

Ya the bones below the second set are significantly weaker than the top set of knuckles. You'd probably break them.

It's not a proper way to punch, just swinging with the 2nd set of knuckles only, but i dont see why you cant use them by themselves....you may have a higher chance of breaking those knuckles though compared to the main ones on your fist. Imo
