Comments Thread For: Thurman Explains Why He Calls Mayweather an 'Old Man'

MGM Grand, Las Vegas - Recently, hard punching Keith Thurman (23-0, 21KOs) branded WBC/WBA welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (37-0, 26KOs) as an "old man."

Thurman believes Mayweather, who is closer to 40 than he is to 30, is very close to retirement, and points to Floyd calling himself TBE [The Best Ever] as proof.

Thurman returns on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in as Vegas, when he defend his WBA interim-welterweight championship against Leonard Bundu (31-0, 11KOs) in a Showtime televised fight.

I dont think Thurman will ever get chance and thats ok. As good as i think Thurman is right now i dont think hes ready for Floyd. But like i mentioned in another thread i think Thurman is really good right now but I truly believe he can be great. Time will tell. In the mean time im excited to for this kids career.

It doesn't really need explaining, does it?

He's almost 40 and still fighting, it's hardly a complex nickname that needs to be thoroughly explained.

I think that is kind of why he said it, he is stuck in a crappy position because all these guys are angling for Floyd that have no shot in hell at getting him. He knows he has no real shot at getting Floyd in the ring before he retires, but since Floyd is old and on the way out he is perfectly fine with that.

While others are focused on the dying days of the last generation getting their star that way, Thurman is more concerned about getting his next.

Patience is lost on a lot of people now a days but seeing someone young and talented acting in a patient thoughtful manner speaks highly of them.

I dont think Garcia will ever be ready for Floyd but he is the top dog at 140 and its a fight i would like to see. I would like to see Thurman too but right now i dont think either beats Floyd. I would say 2 big fights in 2015. Get some big stage, big fight, big comp exposure and in 2016 hell be elite, depending on those fights, but Floyd might be gone by then.

Thurman v Garcia would be pretty good too.

To be honest am not sold on him, I just don't think he is anything special. Yes he has power but his stamina is questionable, his ring IQ is questionable. I do hope he goes on to bigger and better things doe because boxing need all the new younger guys at the moment... In with the new Kovalev etc out with the old guards.

I agree with everything you wrote.

Thurman doing it the right way.
