Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao, determined to push through with a tune-up fight in Manila on July 2 before a planned third encounter with Erik Morales, has offered former super bantamweight champion Oscar Larios $300,000 for a fight in Manila.
Larios had earlier said he wouldn’t come to Manila after HBO backed out because of what they perceived as an unstable situation.
But the Mexican later indicated he was willing to come if the purse was $400,000.
Pacquiao himself told Viva Sports/Standard Today that Larios was asking too much.
However, his friend and confidant Rex Salud yesterday disclosed that he would be leaving for the US with Pacquiao on Sunday to finalize details of the July 2 card, which would also feature Rey Bautista, Jimrex Jaca and possibly Bobby Pacquiao.
Salud said Bobby Pacquiao may defend his World Boxing Council (WBC) Intercontinental title against a Mexican opponent while Jaca’s opponent would depend on the outcome of his clash with Japan’s national champion Nobuhiito Honmo for the vacant title.
Honmo has a record of 27-4-2 with 5 KOs and has had eight successful title defenses since June 2004.
Pacquiao’s manager Shelly Finkel said that should Larios refuse, he had a backup plan, which would be disclosed after he meets with Pacquiao in Los Angeles.
Giant TV network ABS-CBN entered into an agreement with Pacquiao to underwrite the staging of the fight and to handle the television coverage, both at home and abroad, including the pay-per-view.
There were also indications that an agreement would be reached for Pacquiao-Morales III later this year.
Pacquiao said he plans to honor his contractual obligation with Morales for a third fight, but only at 130 lb.
He said that after the Morales fight, he would be more than ready and willing to accept the challenge of WBC super featherweight champion Marco Antonio Barrera for a rematch.
