    Age Advantage in Boxing

If you watch HBO, Jim Lampley will always give the younger fighter an age advantage. For example, one guy is 25 and the other is 30, Lampley will say "he has a 5 year age advantage".

Is being the younger fighter honestly an advantage? I don't think so unless you're fighting a 50 year old.

Don't they say a man's physical prime is 28-35? Also consider the older fighter usually has more experience.

I think its more of an old man (Lamps) just commenting on a younger mans youth.

Its not necessarily an advantage. Look at Gabe Rosado, he is pretty young but dude is like 45 in boxing years because of all the punishment he has taken.

Thurman is 26 and Bundu is 40. Fourteen-year difference. Let's see how this fight goes this Saturday.

Experience is measured in fights, not years I guess. I see your point though.

Far worse than this however is the continued use of Compubox. Especially the compubox 'connect percentage'. Complete horseshit, but presented to viewers as gospel truth. Ridiculous.

It all depends on the individual fighters and what they have done with their careers. I suppose the main reason why the analysts and commentators give the younger man an advantage is because their youth provides them with explosive energy, speed and strength an older fighter will generally be losing the higher he climbs in years. Their body is also less damaged since they most likely haven't endured too many "wars", thus youth is an advantage over a war torn vet.

However there are situations where very young fighters are beyond shot and are worse off than a 30 plus year old. I.E. Hernan Marquez is 26 but due to his fighting style and the constant brutal fights his body has endured over his young career, he has aged horrendously. More defensive minded boxers tend to preserve themselves a lot better while offensive minded fighters tend to decline much faster and at an earlier age.

Ive always wondered the same thing with those Lampley comments. Makes no difference in the age the younger one always has the age advantage but at some point you'd think experience becomes an advantage and youth becomes a disadvantage.

I don't know I just chalk it up as another reason why I think Lampleys a tool just a A-1 douche.

Experience is an advantage but it has very little use when your body no longer responds well and thus your game plan suffers. You could telegraph your opponent, get in his head, know what is coming next, etc.. but if your body is shot and your reflexes are gone, your hand speed is sluggish and your punch resistance is non existent, all that experience becomes useless. Boxing is a young man's game.

I totally agree with your post all I'm just referring to Lampley age advantage schtick that he does every fight.

Age isnt something like height or reach. There's other factors like you've mentioned that can't be measured just because 1 fighter is younger Its not always an advantage and sometimes that youth might be a disadvantage.
