  • Comments Thread For: Sergio Martinez Career Decision Likely in January

Former WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-3-2, 28KOs) is not going to make a decision regarding the future of his career until the month of January, according to close friend and adviser Sampson Lewkowicz.

Martinez has been inactive since getting a one-sided pounding at the hands of Miguel Cotto on June 7th in New York's Madison Square Garden. The boxer has been suffering from severe right knee injuries that have affected his career tremendously. He was practically one legged fighter against Cotto.

Coming from a diehard Cotto fan that was there live, he was deff not fine. Martinez is a great sportsman and he behaved like one for that post fight interview. Something was very wrong with him in that fight

His knees are gone, just retire dude. I wonder how he got such bad knees? its weird because he doesn't really focus much on roadwork and mostly did bicycling and kayaking which is easy on the knees.

Maybe from his clumsy back stepping footwork he placed his foot awkwardly and hurt it?

He played soccer for years when he was young, he wanted to be a footballer. In an interview he mentioned that it is impossible to understand his boxing style without soccer. He has overused his legs.

He needs to hang them up. He's 40, injury ridden and coming off back to back bad performances and he isn't gonna get any better.

He was running from GGG hastily and tripped over. That`s how he damaged his knees.

Soccer helps having strong legs and cycling strengthen the knee joints so it is a great combo and helped him with his boxing career. Soccer is one of the best sports for stamina. His style of excessive changing angles, along with Chavezīs punches, messed up his knees. Watch both knock downs in the Chavez fight. The first one probably tore his ligament and the second one which was mostly a push, damaged it more.
