Comments Thread For: Crawford-Beltran: Boxing WAY After Dark Sees Ratings Dip

Terence Crawford capped a banner year—one many will argue is worthy of Fighter of the Year honors—with a 12-round virtuoso performance versus Raymundo Beltran on Nov. 29 at home in Omaha, Nebraska.

The win netted Crawford (25-0, 17KOs) the vacant World lineal lightweight championship—as recognized by BoxingScene.com—in addition to scoring his 3rd consecutive victory over a top-rated lightweight. It also strengthened his standing as a rising box-office attraction, drawing a crowd of 11,127 at CenturyLink Center, with his two appearances at the venue on the year pulling in more than 22,000 in paid attendance.

Where Crawford fell indefensible, however, was in having to fight deep into the night and going up against the most watched college football game of 2014.

A peak average of 836,000 viewers tuned in for the lightweight championship, on a televised tripleheader that actually saw viewership decline as the night went on. The bout peaked at 936,000 viewers, with both ratings serving as the lowest for any of Crawford’s five appearances on HBO. [Click Here To Read More]

Well at least it drew a crowd of 11,000+

There was a late start time, Terrance Crawford isn't really known to the casual fan yet and Raymundo Beltran is even lesser known.

No big deal. It was a good card. Crawford-Beltran was a solid fight and the undercard was a fantastic mathchup on paper. Undefeated champion vs. undefeated challenger/rising prospect in a voluntary defense. Can't ask for much more then that.

Also... I bet if any boxing fans who don't really watch the sport often but were tuning in were watching the Gradovich-Velez fight, they probably turned it off before the main event and will never watched the sport again after that disgusting robbery. All of these robberies by these criminal judges ruin the sport and we need to start seeing officials arrested and interrogated by cops. Messing with a mans financial and athletic career and possibly ruining great things to come (not necessarily Gradovich) is as bad a crime as a home invasion or breaking into a store and robbing the owners at gun point, with no violence. Disgusting.

The Manny vs Algeri fight should have went on last.
