He was a cash cow for a smaller promotion who had no other stars to promote. That's why when he lost they immediately folded.

He had to be managed very carefully in MMA because he had no ground game to speak of. Only casual fans believed the hype. Anyone who actually knew the sport knew he was a joke. I actually give those who promoted him credit, they made a joke look legit enough that he carried one promotion and then they managed to get him in the UFC when that promotion folded.

The UFC gave him even matched fights against no-names. Imagine Chuck Liddell v Kimbo on S-pike when they had him under contract. It would have made viewing records (UFC can't get Kimbo numbers in 2014), even a PPV would have done ok, the type of numbers they would kill for today. With his boxing career it's a lot more difficult because he struggles with D level fighters and the fans that loved him in mma don't cross over as much...still Kimbo v Holyfield, Tarver, RJJ, they would at least sell some tickets even today. Let Hopkins destroy him in a tune-up on ESPN, why not?
