Comments Thread For: Matthew Macklin is Undecided on His Boxing Future

Matthew Macklin’s hopes of another world title shot were shattered by a 10th round stoppage defeat by Jorge Sebastian Heiland in Dublin.

The Birmingham man was hoping to line up another crack at a middleweight belt, but will find it hard to rebuild after being halted in dramatic fashion.

A string of damaging battles appear to have finally taken their toll on ‘Mack the Knife’, who was gradually grinded down before Heiland signalled the end with a crisp right hand.

Macklin swiftly found his range in the opener, rattling right hands into the ribs of Heiland, who was briefly troubled by the early onslaught.

'grinded down'? Seriously? Get a dictionary for gods sake. The writing on this site is absolutely terrible.

a credible fighter, not big @ 5'10'' but he is durable & makes the effort, better than many, a good opponent type, but not elite...he needs 2 come 2 reality @ this stage, unless wants 2b a gate keeper, he's finished...

If he genuinely was in good shape coming in then he#s in trouble. Macklin's technique isn't world class and he needs to be outhustling guys to win at that level. He got outworked and overwhelmed last night.

It's a pity more of these second tier middleweights haven't fought each other. They've mostly spent the last few years avoiding each other and fighting eliminators against lower ranked opponents. Macklin's career trajectory from here probably depends on how Lee does against Korobov.

I'm of the opinion it wasn't as much how bad Macklin looked as how good Heiland is. I think we'll discover soon that Heiland will be a tough cookie for any top MW. Obviously some of it is Macklin's eroding, but I don't think that's much of the reason. Time will tell. In the meantime, if he does decide to continue, he needs to work on defense and staying busy against mid-level opponents.
