Comments Thread For: Gilberto Ramirez on the Brink of Title Shot

By Steve Kim - If you haven't noticed, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is no longer the apple of Bob Arum's eye. The wayward Chavez, who has been on the sidelines since March, has been unable to come to terms with Top Rank on a fight since his rematch with Bryan Vera, and has also signed with adviser Al Haymon, which means that if this was a marriage, these two parties aren't just sleeping in separate rooms, but Junior has called an attorney and filed for divorce.

And with that, Arum's newest love affair is with Gilberto Ramirez, who faces Fulgencio Zuniga this weekend at the Alamodome in San Antonio in an HBO Latino main event.

"I think that he certainly has the skills of Julio, probably more, and without the baggage," notes the veteran promoter. And yeah, the son of “The Lion of Culiacan” has more baggage than LAX and LaGuardia Airport combined, so for Arum, the best part of dealing with Ramirez is the fact that this 23-year-old from Sinaloa, Mexico is, for now, just a hard-working young fighter.

In many respects, he is the antithesis of the pampered and entitled Chavez Jr., who was enabled to no end for years by Top Rank, which ended up creating a monster that they ultimately couldn't corral. [Click Here To Read More]

Great article. I am truly excited about Gilberto, I have been for the longest now. Glad to see the unwarranted attention shift from a snob to a hardworking, dedicated and talented young fighter. I love how TR is grooming their talents in Oscar Valdez and El Zurdo de Oro.

JCC jr has nothing on Gilberto.

He was a prospect lol, of course he is going to be spoon fed. To top it off he started his career in Mexico. Name 5 fighters above 160 from Mexico right now worthy of any acclaim. Go on.... You can't because there isn't. He just recently began fighting decent talent and he has disposed of them in an impressive fashion. He is under 25 and his skill is growing along with his experience. Seriously, don't be fooled by those stats. Although he has a long resume he has very little experience at a bigger stage due to he limitations of quality opponents in his home country, how is that his fault?

He's slow as a UPS truck and very easy to hit.

              So is Jr

I don't see either guy going very far at 168 and beyond...just to slow.

It will be fun to see them fight one another.

Seems like the kid is doing it the right way. Hopefully he impresses and steps his competition up a bit. The only problem is there isn't exactly a long list of contenders at 168 and most of them are Euro guys.
