Faced with the risk of permanent blindness had he chosen to continue his career, lightweight contender John Murray officially announced his retirement from the sport Wednesday evening.

One month shy of his 30th birthday, Murray (33-3, 20KOs) was hoping for one more run towards a major title, though the effort has proven to be an uphill climb in recent times. The all-action Brit suffered a 10th round stoppage at the hands of fellow Mancunian Anthony Crolla in April, with all three career losses coming in his past five contests.

A shame to hear. He's made the right decision though.

I used to enjoy watching Murray fight when he was making a name for himself. You always knew you would get a fun fight and a gutsy performance.

Sad when you hear about someone who has to retire and are barely 30, even though it is not a young man's game. Hope he has a second career already planned in advance.

This is sad to hear. I kept expecting Murray to come back and fight guys like Campbell, Coyle, Burns, or even a Mitchell rematch seeing as their fight was such a barnburner.

His first loss, the Mitchell fight should have been the end. He showed severe limitations that would have obstructed any chance of winning at world level. Nice guy, hope he becomes a trainer rather than a doorman.

Sad to hear, but clearly the right decision. Hope he finds success in training.
