CHICAGO — Fres Oquendo’s wife and newborn were in the hospital when he boarded a plane to Grozny, Russia in July to take on Ruslan Chagaev for the WBA Heavyweight title – a fight that was slated to take place just 36 hours after his arrival. For his troubles, Oquendo was guaranteed a purse of $1 million dollars and a rematch within 120 days in the event that he lost.

Surely he didn't expect to be paid 1 million dollars for that.

I actually know a relative Chagaev's promoter. I am going to ask her about this. If I never post again I guess you know what happened.

Given the circumstances and the fact that there was a contract stating he would make 1 million, he obviously did. I don't care for Oquendo as a fighter and even if he didn't deserve a payday like that its a disgrace to not abide by a contract.
