Comments Thread For: Kovalev's Trainer on Mayweather: Forget Pac, Face GGG

John David Jackson, trainer of WBO/IBF/WBA light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev, says Floyd Mayweather Jr. should forget about a super-fight Manny Pacquiao and instead pursue a real dangerous challenge, by facing WBA/IBO/WBC-interim middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin. Mayweather is the WBC/WBA champion at welterweight and junior middleweight.

Jackson wants to see Mayweather replicate the actions of Bernard Hopkins, who at 49-years-old accepted a dangerous challenge by stepping in the ring with Kovalev last Saturday night.

Floyd fighting GGG is not like hopkins fighting Kolev at all....

Floyd weighs 150 on fight night and you want him to fight a KO artist at 160.

It would be like hopkins fighting kolev if hopkins was 165 on fight night.

Why didn't Hopkins move up 5 divisions like Floyd to truly test himself? Why didn't Hopkins ever fight guys way bigger on fight night than him like a 15+ lbs bigger? Why didn't Hopkins do USADA or VADA testing like others have challenged themselves to due?

If Floyd was ever going to go after a belt at 160 it would be against Miguel Cotto and that's about it. Floyd doesn't have the firepower to move up like that so he dances with 154 and primarily fights at 147. If he had say another 4 to 5 years id agree that a move up would be ideal, at his age though I think it would be flirting with disaster. Oh and all the weight talk, he fought Canelo who weighed pretty much the same as Golokin did after rehydration.

          Completely agree with Jackson.

If beating a fighter who jumped three weight divisions for the first time is such a great win for FLoyd against Marquez, Why wouldn't fans want to see a great win for Floyd against GGG? after all, weight does not matter, skills do.

Look at the flip-flopping. Same people praised Marquez as a Legitiamte Matchup for FLoyd, but put him in the same weight climb against GGG, at the same age Marquez was, and it becaomes illegitimate?

Floyd's natural weight is 147. He couldn't shed two pounds to make weight against Marquez. Thats his natural weight, and you add in his age, and he is not going back down, and has not since the day he failed to make weight.

When Marquez made the jump to fight Mayweather the same age, 36. He went up in weight to fight Mayweather, but he went back down to lightweight for his next to fights.

GGG is 32 now, thats the same age Mayweather was when he faught Marquez who was 36, and Mayweather is now 37.

          same circumstances

So let's see it, put up and call for the fight. TBE?

Will you stop saying that, there wouldn't be weight classes if it was the case.

How many times have you seen a fight where the bigger dude just took control, Gamboa vs Crawford for instance, by your theory Floyd could beat Anthony Joshua

If someone is just bigger overall and hits harder, then it doesn't matter how skilled you are.

Floyd can't even make 150 anymore, he'd probably get knocked out in about 3 rounds.

I agree. Everything about GGG is Super Duty while Floyd is a 1/2 ton. It simply would not be competitive as GGG is an accomplished champion too.
