Boxing legend Leon Spinks is finally walking, talking and smiling again ... after a medical scare stemming from a chicken bone accident ... TMZ Sports has learned.

As we previously reported, Spinks was hospitalized -- and was in pretty bad shape -- after swallowing a chicken bone ... which got lodged in his intestine.

We spoke with Leon's attorney Steve Pacitti who tells us the former champ is still in the hospital -- but he's making tremendous progress.

Leon was one of the best interviews ever by Howard Stearn. Howard could not get Leon excited, or angry no matter what he said, and Howard said plenty. It was too funny, but Leon was cool under fire, one of the few to leave that show with some dignity.

a young fighter. He has endured a lot in his life and was mistreated and misguided for a long time. He is a very likeable man who deserves a safe life

I am just glad he is getting better. How ironic would it have been for the guy to overcome the odds you mention above, to get laid to rest over a chicken bone.
