  • Comments Thread For: Manager: Kovalev Ready To Outbox, Not Chase Hopkins

Manager Egis Klimas says his fighter, WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (25-0-1, 23KOs), is not going to spend the entire fight chasing after Bernard Hopkins, the IBF's champion, in order to score a knockout victory. They will clash on Saturday night in a three belt unification at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

The 49-year-old veteran is very crafty and often outthinks opponents who are perceived to be powerful punchers - like Jean Pascal, Felix Trinidad, Kelly Pavlik, Tavoris Cloud, Beibut Shumenov and Antonio Tarver.

He's not going to outclinch and out headbutt him and whatnot but if things are kept clean he should have an easy time outboxing him.

If Kovalev's team really plans to outbox BHop then they're planning to lose.

A simple idea: Hopkins's defensive skills need someone who is rushing offensively... In case the opponent isn't assaulting B-Hop, grandpa will need to throw something, in order to get points... And when B-Hop will eventually throw something you'll see what's happening...

Sergey will do what he always does.. Go to to toe with the boxer and throw straight shots.

He's needs to forget outboxing BHop and do a terminator number on him.

Again, there are going to be a lot of people screaming at their screens, wondering why Kovalev isn't throwing punches.

Poor grandpa seems lost in deep thinking... "If not rolling with punches, clinching, holding, headbutting, smothering what do I have to do now?... Do I have to throw punches and attack this ****** white boy?" a.s.o.
